Molly and me
Molly is my writing buddy and my most loyal fan. She’s been by my side through years of writing, and yes, disappointing rejections, too, watching in silence with compassion and love brimming in her big, brown eyes. Okay, so she’s my dog . . . she just hasn’t realized that yet. Molly Cole Campisi is a ten year old black lab, affectionately known in our household as The Queen. I guess she got that nickname because we spoil her horribly. Maybe it’s that face that makes us want to do her bidding. Or maybe it’s just because she’s the smart one and we’re the fools! She’s used to air conditioning and soft rugs . . . oh, and two pillows on her foam bed. Given a choice between pets and pet owners, she’ll opt for the owners every time. And she thinks all visitors to our house are here to see her, just like the UPS man, who comes to give her a treat, not to deliver a package.
But as much as she’s lived a very comfortable life, Molly’s had a tough go of it, too, and that’s probably really why we spoil her. At age three, she underwent double ACL surgery and couldn’t run or jump anymore like normal dogs. Prior to surgery, one romp around the house would have her crying and my husband carrying her upstairs to bed at night. (Did I mention Molly is slightly overweight? I know, I know, she needs to lose weight….and she is….finally.) Her back legs are bony and arthritic and when she walks in the snow, she leaves a trail from dragging her back feet. But that doesn’t stop her from making daily walks around the neighborhood, swimming and riding in the car to visit friends one town over. Molly is truly a great joy and a very important part of our family Animal owners are indeed a strange breed and I’m blessed to be one of them.
